As Jere suggested, it turned out to be easier with the cone in 2 parts. It was hard to work out the best shape to cut the sheet into to get the right final shape. Several attempts! I used the tree...

After thinking about the idea that Steve had I realised that the angle of the cone remains constant so I could work out "X" from the distance...
