I've used sharpie pen marks as the 'soot' and it works okay, as they fade to almost nothing around annealing temperature of 650F for 5052. The more sure fire way is to get a tempilstick that...

This method makes just one loud noise. It's probably not practical for a home garage but I still think it's cool

Annealing strategies

I have a panel mostly to shape. It's 3003 H14 0.063 inch. It's probably in that +/- 1/4 inch of the buck in terms of fit. I have not annealed since starting.

I'm tempted to anneal now to make...

Yes, the panel will get welded in. So what I hear is make a wide flange on either the trough or the larger upper panel and make a butt weld at the edge of the flange. A flange on the trough would...

I agree. There's usually some deep grooves on the backside that could initiate cracking. I try to wash over the back and add filler if needed whenever I can reach the backside of the weld.

This is a picture of the actual panel I'm asking about. Now I'm 50/50 on whether to flange the perimeter or not. It's more substantial than I thought and would probably hold it's shape okay without...

The heat of tig welding should anneal the weld...

The heat of tig welding should anneal the weld line for 1100, 3003 and 5052 alloys. Annealing again after initial planishing should help as well. I've found that 1100 filler doesn't harden up so...

Inset panel

I need to put a trough shape into a larger fender. I'm thinking I want to put a small lip on the trough to give it some shape for assembly. This will make a small lap seam in the finished panel...

I think most custom builders use 3003 or even 1100 for shaped tanks, in the case of either of those I'd use 1100 filler. Doubtful it's 5052 but if it were I'd use 5356.

These aren't just my...

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. This may be my first attempt using 3003 panels (I have 5052 on hand but may purchase 3003 instead). I've been using 5052 because it's so much cheaper...

Assembly of 3003 and 6061 and filler rod choices

I plan to have few components of 6061 plate in a fender assembly of 3003 sheet. I'll be using 1100 filler on the 3003-3003 seams and 5356 filler on the 3003 to 6061 seams. There will likely be some...

source for 3003 0.063 inch in MN

I've been using 5052 for motorcycle tanks and fenders but have struggle with planishing the welds without cracking. I TIG weld with 5356 filler.

I see the guys that use 3003 often use 1100 filler...
