A couple of months ago I decided not to buy a FRP body kit for the project I am working on. I decided to put the money into tooling ( e-wheel, and bead roller, plasma etc.) The plan is to shape new front and rear bumpers and the replace the plastic rear quarter with steel.

This will be my first project of this type, pretty tame compared to some of threads on this board. Attached pictures are the "befores" and the other pics are of work already done. Last picture is of a battery pedestal that got me thinking about doing the panels in steel.

Love it. Can't wait to see your progress.
Nissan power? LOL. Coming from the guy putting a Ford in a Volvo and thinking about putting an Olds in a Chevy.

Whats the plan on the bumpers? OEM in metal or tucked custom style?

Nice project!

I'm sure teh SR20DET will get it to move.

What is the machined aluminum piece used for? That has be stumped. Never mind, Optima battery.

The original "safety" bumper stick out way to far IMO. The plan for the rear bumper is a custom tuck following the body lines. I would like to continue the radius of the wheel well into the new panel. That line stops where the plastic piece starts. Given my level of experience I was planning on three separate panels for the rear mimicking the original. That way if something goes sideways I am only throwing away 1/3 of the work.

I may have to punch a hole in it for the tow hook(s). Not sure if I want to do that or not. Tow hooks are required for some events.

The front bumper will have a centered opening for the intercooler and frenched turn signal lights that will be down low in the panel.

The buck for the rear panel is taking shaping. Sure glad I did not glue it together, I can already see some areas that need adjustments. Next will be the bucks for the lower rear side panels.

Here's an update. First attempt to gas weld corner piece to rear panel went a little sideways and had to start over. I actually had the end gas weld together - it was when I tried to fix pin holes that I trashed the part. Sticking with MIG until I get more experience. I have made some progress on the front bumper but it is not ready for prime time.:D It was really slow in the beginning, but it is going quicker now.

Hachi Roku!

And with SR power, very cool!!

Happy to see another "modern Classic" car tweaker.

Very cool project you have going on, that will look very good with the smooth rear bumper. the front should be interesting as well

The rear bumper reminds me of a Datsun 510. I love AE86's, excited to see your progress.
