Bomber seat

Hello together,

after reading in this forum for quite a while without contributing a lot, I now want to share the build of my aluminum bomber style seat with you.
In the past 1 or 2 years I was getting more and more fascinated by the metalshaping skills of many people I have seen in the internet and started to read an re-read books, watch videos and suck in as much information about the topic as possible.

As we all know the best way to learn something is to do it so I looked for a project which would teach me how to form metal by hand and with the help of some basic machines but still be something that can be used afterwards.
On youtube I saw a video by Ron Covell in which he makes a aluminum bomber seat. I loved the look oft he seat so much that I wanted to give it a try by myself.

After countless hours of work and making some mistakes on my way I am now finished with the seat. Itīs by far rougher than the seat by Mr. Covell but I am happy with the result anyway.

Bye,

Tobi

Great job. Great result.

He recently I tested the 1mm steel sheet seat. You could make it in one piece.

Very nice work! They would look right at home in a very light car or a Bomber. I'd like to make a set for my Okrassa powered Beetle in the future.

PS: I really like your dining room chairs!

Great job on your Bomber Seat! I'm amazed at the close spacing you were able to get the belled holes. The Mittler Brothers dies I use have a 1/4-inch (6.25mm) flat around the edges.
Can you post pictures of your belling dies?

Superb job Tobi. I'd be proud to have done that.

Top job Tobi. Please don't read any more books as you will put the rest of us to shame! :)

Very cool. Great job, Tobi.

When I saw it next to the table with the other "normal" chairs, it made me think that you could make a whole set for your table....

very cool seats, I need to make a couple speedster seats for my project, in the not too distant future, thanks for showing your work

Wow, thanks for all the compliments! That motivates me to go on!

@Ron: I made my own dimple dies on my lathe. When I saw that I have clearing issues with the die because of the too tightly spaced holes I reduced the outer lip of the dimple die (see pic). Interestingly it didnīt affect the quality of the dimple.

@clifford & gashammer: funny that you mentioned the chairs. I donīt have a car for this seat so I want to make it a rocking chair (see the attached pic with a sample base). I just the materials to try to make the base by myself as well.

@Jaroslay & Neilb: I always loved the style of the original Porsche Speedster seats and was thinking how to make those in one piece. When I see the example from Jaroslav I think I should just give it a try.:)
