I have began the process of mating the TOW missile launcher top body panels to the troop carrier M998 Humvee truck, and in the process of changing the windshield to the stronger one to carry the load of the turret, I have stumbled across some wiring issues that might be best done during that changeover as some of this wiring goes down the center post of the windshield. The speakers are mounted at the top of the windshield and I want to run the wiring before installation as the armament carrier windshields do not fold down exposing the bottom of the center post.

I am hoping that one of you gentlemen/ladies has some military communication expertise that I might avail myself of. I have the TM's for both the speakers and the intercom system, but am having a difficult time matching the part numbers in the TM's to those of the parts suppliers and those items on ebay. Particularly the part numbers of the cables that go between the components. I am also not certain weather I need a separate power supply and if I need the radio interface box if I am only using the intercom system. Can anyone look at this schematic that I am piecing together and offer any help? This is holding up some progress on this build.

I don't have a lot of experience with commo parts, but you might try searching for the NSN (National Stock Number) of the part number listed in the TM. Vendors may be listing the NSN, as multiple companies may be making the same part to a MIL-STD or DoD drawing.

Thanks Andrew. In searching for the NSN cross overs, I stumbled across a series of pages that directly crossed over those numbers to the CX-****_"X" numbers for the cables and I ended up acquiring a complete set of cables along with the Full Function Crew Stations and Master Control Station that was more appropriate for the Humvee intercom system. I was only intending to talk to one passenger, but this setup will let all 4 occupants talk to each other. The original TM info that I started with was actually for the Tanks and APC's. I have run across several good Humvee mechanics, but Comm. guys seem to be pretty scarce. I have the CB antenna figured out, but making a 2-meter HAM radio antenna that looks like an 'official' military antenna is proving to be difficult. I have found some mating two level radio shelves and have made a drawing for mounting the comm 'stuff' in between the upper and lower shelves. It went to the water jet guy today. I made a pair of cup holders and installed an original flashlight bracket, and installed a 24v to 12v converter to run the CB and the 2-meter radios. Thanks again, that got me started.

Been hectic around here for awhile. The Redneck Roundup, Model a Seminars, Dan's Route 56 Meet, took Humvee to a Military meet in North Carolina (Huey and Cobra attack choppers, etc) and more recently more repairs to the farm. had a severe rainstorm, more fence, tree and pond cleanup, etc. Been getting a little bit more done on the speedster, and am about done with the Humvee with the exception of removing and rebuilding the fuel tank. I finished building the radio trays, over head console, rear view mirror mount (actually a back up camera).Mounted a gun safe, an interior luggage rack, made mounts for the ammo carrier can , the.50 cal. gun cradle and an aluminum 'chicken guard' and built a carrier cradle to mount 'MaDuece' (w/ barrel removed)to the underside of the rear sponson hatch. Not a lot of metal shaping more like metal work. I got the VIC-3 intercom headsets mounted and made mounting brackets for the intercom controls, CB radio, 2 meter HAM radio. All the wiring and antenna cables have been run from the controls, under the 'heat' panels and mounted on the rear sponsons. Made adaptors for the front seats to use high back 'commander' seats for more comfort.

Hi,

Interesting project, I didn't know that was what you were doing with the Humvee. Will you be installing a separate antenna for the 2meter radio? If you install a trap in the right spot on the stock humvee antenna you might be able to tune it with an antenna tuner.

Interesting - IF - what I see is the horiz mill shoving holes in the tube mounted in the headstock .... very creative hole indexing. :p

Been catching up a little on the Humvee metal working projects. Going to change the gas tank and upgrade the fuel sending unit on Monday and that will get me very close to putting this project behind me.

I have had to make the left side front bumper extension bracket as the right side is the only side currently available thru surplus outlets. It is offset in two directions, so I measured and cut each individual piece and then assembled then in 'opposite' positions. Redid the wiring above the upper console once I figured out where to mount the fuse block and assemble the switch plate assembly and then made a tube with offset bends on each end to hide the wiring as it goes down the center of the windshield. Quick connect wire connectors at each end of console, upper and lower radio shelves below. The vertical bracket in the foreground is to mount a rearview camera to look like a rearview mirror mount. Fabricated upper and lower rifle mounts for the back seats and reconfigured the .50 cal. mount attaching brackets for the underside of the hatchback. Water jet cut the license plate mounting bracket. Water jet cut and fabricated a mount for the .50 cal. pintle extension mount using existing holes from the 2-man cargo divider.
Made drawings for rock-slider/armor plates for the rocker panels. Made left and right dual tube mounting brackets to house rolled up American and Police appreciation flags and updated the trailer wiring mounting bracket to account for the use of the towing extension package required when using the airlift rear bumper unit.

I am not trying to restore this vehicle, only assemble it to an original condition as much as possible.
