Louvers
Had a early Chevy hood side show up at the shop tonight, the owner wanted a couple different versions of louver samples made up that he could hold against the hood on the car to better visualize. One style he was looking at lends from an early Alfa Romeo that extends the louvers onto the cowl, as shown in the green tape..
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203663.jpg We took a paper pattern of the details so the hood side could go back with him to use as a pattern for the opposite side that still needs to be made. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203664.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203665.jpg Spot welded on some "end stops" for the louver die..... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203667.jpg .....and a squared plate for the back gauge. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203668.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203669.jpg Louvers in the Lennox..... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203670.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203671.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203672.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ure%203674.jpg One sample down, one to go.. |
They look fantastic, I love the look of increasing length louvres.
great method of doing it as well. |
Looks great!
Thanks for showing it for us! |
Robert, do you charge the customer for your time spent making samples ? I wrestle with this in the graphics biz at times because the person wants to see what they're getting but yet can have zero financial attachment to the work and walk away. How do you deal with this ? Best regards, Vinny

For this, yes. Materials and time put it a bit out of the realm of handing out free samples for just doing a louver job on a pair of hood sides... If it were a larger project that was coming in, a complete car build or something, that may weigh differently..

The louvers look great Robert.
Too often in this line of work we may choose to do something because it is challenging but unable to charge the actual time it takes. At times I used to tell people It is my livelihood and your hobby. If one of us must work for nothing it should be you! Enjoy your posts, Ron |
That came out really clean. Could you please show the dies next time you pull them out?
And Ron, that statement would have been great to have on the front door of my shop when I had my business. |
Robert, nice job on the louvers, you have that process down to a science.
Ron, I really like what you said, and it is so true. People don't understand that there is a difference between a hobby and business. |
Thanks for the comments everyone!
Ron, words to live by for sure.. Bob, I'm using one of Neil Dunder's louver cutters.. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y16...g/HPIM6300.jpg |
This is an excellent job, Robert. Every detail is addressed. So good to see all of this. Thank you. :):)
(Some of those old Alfa's sure had some inspiring moves.) ;) |
