Door patch
 

I made this small door patch for my buddies 240z I tacked it in with my tig welder last night it looks like it pulled I just need some confermation if the plan I have is correct. My plan of attack is to use a slapper and dolly to planish my tacks in an attempt to raise the Low Spots where it looks like the metal is bowed in.

That is the right thing to do and will have to do it again after fully welding it. Can just use a hammer and dolly too and I like to use one with a small head to hit the tack only. Just push out with the dolly harder than you hit down with the hammer to raise it.

Thank you for the replay. Should I only hammer the tack or should I hammer and dolly the whole joint? The joint is much lower then the door and the patch?

So long as you had the shape correct before tacking, as you should, then only the tacks need the stretching.

Once fully welded, the stretching needs to be done again along the weld and heat affected zone each side of it.

I feel like the shape was correct. When I laid the patch over the piece I was gonna cut out it seemed to fit pretty well so I went a head and cut it out. I removed the glass and all the mechanicals in the door to try and make it a little easier to get my hand with a dolly back there. I will work on it tonight and see if I can stretch it back up

I wasn't happy with the patch so I broke the tacks retacked it and did a little hammer on dolly work Iam wondering now if I need to do a little more or if I have a shape issue. I do plan on cutting a hole in the door to fit my hand and a dolly in better. I guess Iam looking for ways to fix this or maybe making a bigger patsince I have other rust issues to address on this door, and to keep the distortion from happening or fixing the distortion

You need to bring them right up and even as possible before going any further. Remember to push out harder with the dolly from the inside to raise it than you are hammering from the outside.
